Sam has served as an educator for over three and a half decades in an extensive career in six independent schools and three public schools around the nation. Sam has served in various capacities, including as a teacher, humanities department chair, cross country and track coach, Dean of Students, Upper School Head, and from 2001-2020 as Head of School at two different Christian classical schools: Faith Christian School in Roanoke, VA and Caldwell Academy in Greensboro, NC.
Sam also served as an active duty Army officer for five years and retired from the US Army Reserves. He has served on numerous local and national boards, including the board of directors for The Society for Classical Learning from 2003-2012 and again since 2016, currently serving as treasurer. He has been active on the national level in both The Society of Classical Learning and the Association of Classical Christian Schools for over twenty years. He is currently a member of the vestry (elder) at Church of the Redeemer (Anglican) in Greensboro, has served on Young Life Committee in two cities, and was a member of the VA Council of AdvancED/SACS-CASI.
Sam holds the BS degree from Wake Forest University, the BA from Oregon State University, the MS from the University of South Carolina, and the MA from the College of William and Mary. He has completed additional graduate work at William & Mary, Trinity University, the University of North Florida, Jacksonville University, the University of New Hampshire, Regent College Seminary (Canada), Hebrew University (Israel), Yad Vashem (Israel), the US Army Medical Center and School, and the US Army Command and General Staff College.
